A bumper year so far for data centre commitments = a bumper year for fossil gas, from the same hyperscalers supposedly committed to rapid decarbonisation.
Amazon at their upcoming AGM are rejecting calls for disclosure of the impacts of AI growth on their climate targets – having been models of obfuscation and opaqueness on the reality of their footprint for years. Meta, are in a league of their own in their commitment to fossil gas, and Microsoft similarly are backsliding – while pausing their commitment to CDR. Google’s 933MW power plant at their Goodnight campus alone is projected to emit 4.5m tons of carbon dioxide a year. If data centres are getting built, they need to be net *positive* to the local grid, climate targets, and water consumption. Too much to ask for? Surely AGI will have the answers… 🙄
